Cheerleaders and cheerleading as a sport has been heavily questioned and criticized this year. The sport and its participants are criticized on many levels and for reasons ranging from the dangerous stunts to the value systems cheerleading promotes for young girls. To any of you who have reservations about cheerleading and its validity, you would have eaten your words and applauded had you seen the El Segundo Midget squad representing El Segundo at the Jr Nationals. This group of young women were a credit to our town and conducted themselves with dignity and maturity both on and off the stage. They became National Champions not via crazy stunts but with a sharp, clever routine which they performed prefectly. The scored the highest score in the entire competition with lovely smiles and neat uniforms not make up and clothes that make one blush. They came away with a trophy that represents commitment, teamwork and dedication. How can anyone suggest these are not things that we want to encourage in our daughters. Did I witness the otherside of cheerleading at this competition, the side one sees in movies and promoted in the media? Yes I did and it can be scary but nowhere within the El Segundo Eagle organization is such behaviour tolerated. My daughter is much younger than these girls but I happy to support her in her cheerleading ambitions and I feel lucky that she can work towards her goals within the wonderful organization that is ESYFC. Well done girls. We as a town are so proud of you.

A Reseda park will be renamed today in honor of the first Los Angeles police SWAT officer to die in the line of duty.

At an 11 a.m. ceremony, Councilman Dennis Zine, a former L.A. police officer, will officially re-christen West Valley Park at Vanowen Street and Wilbur Avenue as Randal D. Simmons Park.

A member of the Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics team, Simmons was fatally shot in the neck in February 2008 in Winnetka while trying to persuade a 20-year-old gunman who had killed his father and two brothers to surrender.

The 20-year SWAT veteran was 51. The devout Christian was described as “the rock” of the elite tactical team, the first of its kind in the United States.

Simmons was the first officer killed in the pioneering unit’s four decades. About 10,000 people, most of them law enforcement officers, attended Simmons’ funeral.

“Everybody is going to be pleased because it continues his legacy of community service and community advocacy,” said Jane Kolb, a spokeswoman for the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks.

Our Jr. Pee Wees took their twenty one game winning streak and their defending Mighty Mites Championship into the PCC Championship game on Saturday morning. They matched up against the the Lakewood Spartans. The Spartans was last years runner up champs when we defeated them in triple overtime to be the reigning champs. Earlier this year we matched up with the Spartans in a regular season game in which our Jr Pee Wees prevailed in a 20-6 win. That game was more competitive than the final score. So our head coach knew going in to this rematch that we needed to be on our “A” game even more then our usual workmen like play. As predicted the Spartans proved to be a reputable advessary as they knocked on the door at least three times for a score. Our stingy defense however, did not allow a single yard when the touchdown was on the line. One time a goal line stance. The second time turn overs on downs. And the third time an interception in the end zone to close out the first half with the score remaining 0-0. Not only did Lakewood have a good defensive strategy but our explosive offense didn’t seem to be their normal selves that day. The Spartans held the possession of the football for most of the third quarter. The feisty Eagles defense fought off their assaults again. By spending most of our time fighting off the Spartans our offense just could not establish any good field positions. That turned out to be the determing factor of the game. For our mighty defense finally gave up a touchdown in the latter minutes of the fourth quarter. The Spartans mades the first and only score of the game. The offense tried to get it going but their defense made great tackles all over the football field all game. You have to give credit to our Eagle fans because we didn’t sit on our butts and let us go down quietly. We cheered. We screamed. We showed our boys that we loved them. Its realized that in any sport whether Professional, College, or Youth Football, its just not that easy to win twenty two games in a row. We respected you before this game started and loved the Jr. Pee Wees even more for being daring to be all that they could be. The Board of El Segundo Youth Football and Cheer salutes the 2009 Runner Up Jr. Pee Wee Champions!!!!! We wish that you gentlemen start a new streak next week as they get ready for the Jr. Rose Bowl Tournament! Thank you all for coming out and cheering our boys on. They really appreciated you there. The Eagles will continue to roll on!

The Midgets played the Lakewood Titans on Saturday evening. This game was for the right to play in the PCC Championship. Our defense had strict plans under the guidance of Coach Chris Parr. “Take everything they got but give them nothing!” For three and a half quarters we gave them nothing and we took the game from them. At the end of the first half we were up 6 – 0. Thanks to an interception by the defense and a run back for a touchdown. Lakewood looked confused as if to say that this was not the same Eagles team they played earlier this season with their blow out defeat. In the thid quarter the Titans changed their all out attack offense to a very time consuming run oriented offense. This strategy appeared to have worked. They kept the football for the entire third quarter keeping our highly potent offense off of the field. Our defense denied them in the red zone area. At the end of the third quarter we are still up 6 – 0. The fourth quarter begins and we are on offense for the first time since the second quarter. We go three and out and give up some good field position after punting. Our defense once again is asked to stop this high powered offense. The Titans became desperate. Pulling all the trick plays out their bags yet we denied them. If we hold them this last play maybe we can run the clock out. Lakewood throws a fade rout to the corner. The defense is in place. Only a perfect pass could make this a completion. It was a perfect pass and a touchdown for the Titans. They make their go ahead extra point kick to take the lead from us late in the fourth quarter. We don’t quit though. We throw a quick strike to put us on Lakewood’s side of the field. We go for it all on four different tries. We are denied yet by the Titans stingy defense. The Eagles fans stand up and give the players a standing ovation. These gentlemen have never won a playoff game before. They won two this year. Almost pulled off an upset victory over the defending champs from last year and the year before. The Titans may have won this game but the best team on that night and the best coaching staff on that field that night didn’t win. Congratulation to Chris Parr, his staff and to our Midgets for coming together and producing one of the most exciting season at El Segundo. Good luck to you boys as you persue your highschool football dreams.

“It only takes one play to be an Eagle for life.”

The El Segundo Jr. Pee Wees will take their 21 games winning streak and their Mighty Mites defending champs crown back to the PCC Championship this Saturday at Downey High School. The Jr Pee Wees had no problems with defeating the Lakewood Vikings on Saturday (20-0). The offense attacked with the sense of urgency. Backed by their swarming defense, which denied any attacks attempeted by their opponent. The game was intense for the fans early. But the players appeared to be not fazed by any attempts of sabatoge. At the end of the game our well discliplined Eagles will represent the Pacific Division in the Championship versus the Coast Champions Lakewood Spartans. These two teams have a lot of history between them. At the Mighty Mite division last year they played for the championship. The game went into triple overtime with the Eagles upsetting them. The Spartans felt like it was their championship last year and that they have unfinished business to take care of. They had a chance to take care that unfinished business in October when they matched up in a regular season game. Once again the Eagles proved that they were the better team by putting up a decisive victory. This championship game will determine once and for all that we at El Segundo will not be denied from what is rightfully ours. We are asking that every man, woman and child to be present on Saturday to show your Eagle Spirit, Eagle Pride, and the love that we have for our city… I will be there!! Will you??

Game time 11am at Downey High School….
