1. Team Mon — Congratulations Marianne Bernard. She’ll be contacting all of us regarding scheduling of P/A assignments, chain crew assignments, snack bar duties, fundraisers, halftime & postgame snack, raffle tickets and the like. More on some of those details below.

    a. P/A aka: MPR monitors. 2 parents/friends or family members over the age of 18 each game (home and away) The job is to count and track the plays of each player until they have met the minimum play level set for that game. Benefits: You can stay on the field after you’re done and watch from the sideline & you make sure that all kids get a chance to play. Cons: You’ll miss some of the action as you try to keep up with 11 kids running on and off the field.

Note: If we get a family or 2 who will commit to all eight games as a P/A, I’ll try (at this point I can’t promise) to get you out of snack bar and all other duties for 2008.

   b. Chain crew. 3 parents/friends or family over the age of 16 who work the first down marker and chains for home games only (4 games). One of the three postions should be filled with someone who has done it prior or knows football well. Pros: You are on the field the whole game. Cons: You have to pay attention to your job, and you cant cheer (too much!).

    c. Snack bar. Is there any sport where you don’t have to work the snack bar? Last year it was a 2hr block per family. Not as bad as it sounds, but might not be convenient as we’ll have assignments from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

    d. Raffle tickets. If you didn’t get yours please contact Marianne. You already paid for them, might as well try to sell them or put your name on them, you might win cash $$$

    e. Fundraisers. The better we do at fundraisers the less we pay for fees. There are not too many of these. I handed out a form last week on the “jog-a-thon” On Friday August 8th our boys will run/jog/walk as many laps as they can during practice. See if you can’t get a sponsor or 2 or 10 to offer cash per lap. The cheerleaders did this last week and raised some good money for their program. For estimating, one girl ran 31 laps. Please ignore the minimum $60 per player at the bottom, thats a goal, they’ll gladly accept whatever you can do. However, attendance Friday is manditory for the boys, regardless of the jog-a-thon. I have more forms at practice. I’ll have a prize for the boys who run the most laps and who raise the most money.

    f. Halftime snack. 10 oranges cut into eighths and 30 bottles of chilled water.

    g. Postgame snack. Approx 30 bottles of any sports drink and a treat (either healthy or tasty, your choice)

    h. Extra jobs: Team photographer. You can be on the field, but need to be “Live Scanned” fingerprinted to check background like all the staff. End of the season CD/DVD of photos for the kids. If you’re interested, let me know. This job is an eight game commitment, but gets you out of the other jobs.

i: Extra jobs: Team videographer. You’ll be in the press box or up high in the stands. Do not have to be “live scanned”. You’ll borrow Coach Duke’s camera or use your own and film our games for the coaches to review each week to improve the team. The better the fim the better our team will improve week-to-week. If you are interested let me know. This job is an eight game commitment, but gets you out of the other jobs.

Overall we have 44 “jobs” we have to cover (16 P/A, 12 chain, 8 halftime snack, 8 post game snack). If we pull the staff out of the equation, thats about 2 “jobs” per family. Some are free (p/a’s, chains) some cost a little money (snacks). If you have a preference please contact Marianne and let her know what you can do this year.

2. Game Day operations:

    a. Our games usually start between 8AM and 11AM depending on location and scheduling. Coach Tim will more than likely have your son at the field approx 2 hrs before the game. Certification (your son is weighed and equipment inspected) takes place 1 hr before the game. If you miss certification, you don’t play in the 1st half. Please be on-time, plan your route to away games on Friday.

   b. Conduct: No food or drinks (other than team snacks) can be brought to any PCC games. They won’t let you in if you do. Their biggest money maker is usually the snack bar.

No noise makers, air horns, cow bells etc… They will crack down on this, this year.

Cheer loud and often, but please stay off the ref’s, opposing team and opposing parents.

Note: Coach Tim is responsible for all our kids and their parents on game day. He’ll get kicked out if we become unruly. We have to police ourselves.

    c. Game jerseys/pants. The game pants will be handed out in late August. Do not wear game pants to practice. You keep these until the end of the season and turn them in w/ equipment.

Game jerseys will be handed out at the final practice before each game and collected after the game. (Make sure you have a t-shirt to wear home). You may wear your jersey to school on Friday, but you are responsible for it. There are no extra jerseys on game day. I’ll have limitied supply of extra parts on game day, but please don’t forget any of your equipment.

   d. Extra personal protective equipment. Any extra pads, neoprene sleeves and the like will probably be OK if the child is wearing it for additional protection. If it is because of an injury, he’ll need a Doctor’s note that specifically states the equipment is manditory for that particular child to wear during tackle football. There is no taping of ankles, wrists or any body part unless done by a certified athletic trainer with a note attached. Glasses must be athletic safety glasses or goggles. I’ll check each of our kids before we go to the scale for weigh-in to make sure they will all be eligible to play.

    e. Game day weigh-in (certification). They will check for weight (101 lbs with cleats, pants, pads, cup and jersey). No shoulder pads or helmets. They will make sure every kid has all his pads including cup. They will ask your son his name, what school he goes to and his address. (To verify residency and eligibilty).

3. Injuries

If they occur on the practice field or game field, we will complete an injury report which goes to the PCC and our insurance carrier. The reason football costs so much is mainly two areas. Liability insurance and medical insurance. The PCC insurance is secondary to your insurance policy, but if your child is injured it can be a real help. If we do an injury report, your son will need a Doctor’s note to return to practice. Injuries are usually obvious and require a Doctor’s care the same day. But don’t hesitate to ask for an injury report if your child wakes up the day after a practice or game and has the symptoms of a serious injury (some of our boys will not say anything if they are hurt, until they can’t come to practice).

4. Useful information:

www.eteamz.com/pcc This is the league’s website. You can see the rules, pictures, schedules, standings and other information.

Anyway so much for trying to be brief…

As I drove home from Compton on Saturday, I thought about the work being done quietly in this city to bridge the gap between haves and have-nots. The death last week of LAPD SWAT Officer Randy Simmons — and the life it revealed — put that notion on my mind.Simmons began a ministry called “Glory Kids” 11 years ago, donating his own money and raising more from church members and corporate benefactors to pay for two vans and enough food, clothing and toys to help about 1,000 children a month. He spent his weekends visiting housing projects, taking kids on field trips and talking to them about their problems.

No grand plans launched the ministry, just Simmons’ desire to help and a belief that he could make a difference.

El Segundo Youth Football and Cheer has lost a family member. In news that has reverberated across Los Angeles, our El Segundo family is in mourning for our dear friend and hero Randy Simmons. Randy gave to the league as not only a valued Coach, but as a mentor overtly and covertly.

This was on a bus in Minnesota. I recall Randy leading extremely silly songs whereby all the boys sang right along.

Helping lead the team prayer before Staples game.

Randy taught us that there is always more to give to our teammates and more importantly to our community. The bar of expectation has been raised for all to see. We can hear you screaming down on us & asking, “Watcha gonna do?”

“It is said no man stands so tall as when he stops to help a child,” Los Angeles Police Department Chief William Bratton told the more than 10,000 people gathered at the Crenshaw Christian Faith Dome for Simmons’ funeral….”Well if that’s the case, then Randy was truly a giant.”

Your humility and your life has served us and changed us forever. We are all humbled by your legacy and are forever moved by your call to action. “Don’t clap, go ask the brother how you can help!”
